Warren Monroe Sage papers
Biographical / Historical note
Warren Monroe Sage (1834-1910) was a renowned professional musician and music professor. The violin was his primary instrument, but as a music teacher and director he oversaw many musical performances and musical conventions in the Western New York area. His work mostly consisted of composing music, tutoring students, and performing regularly in concerts in the Metropolitan Rochester, NY area. Besides his musical endeavors, W.M. Sage was a well known public figure throughout the Western New York State area. He helped organize the Village of Bergen, and became its first mayor in 1877, and was reelected several times after that. Sage was also a spiritualist, and his diary entries contain many entries related to spiritualism though he was also associated with more mainstream religious denominations. He was also active in several business enterprises and as an officer in a land company and oil petroleum company.
