Collection of woman-owned business advertisements and ephemera
Historical note
This collection predominantly consists of advertisements featuring women entrepreneurs from all around the United States. Before the 1900s woman entrepreneurship was uncommon, and these materials demonstrate the pioneering spirit of women. The collection displays the fields women were involved in from 1815-1945; most of the materials originating from businesses selling items and services directed at women, such as milliners, dressmakers, fancy goods, and educational institutions. Women in medical professions became common after 1900, many again specifically directing their services towards women. While the earliest printed date on the materials is 1827, research indicates that some of the undated material may be from as early as 1815.
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of 122 business cards, pamphlets, and brochures promoting women owned businesses and female entrepreneurs. A wide scope of occupations are included, from milliners, to educators, to medical practitioners.
