Biographical / Historical note

Glyndon G. Van Deusen graduated from the University of Rochester in 1925 with an A.B. degree. In 1926 he received an A.M. from Amherst College, and in 1932 a Ph.D. degree from Columbia University. He began teaching at the University of Rochester in 1930 as an instructor in the history department. In 1933 he became an assistant professor, in 1942 an associate professor, and in 1947 a full professor of history. From 1954 to 1962 he was the chairman of the history department, and from 1957 to 1960 he was the associate dean of graduate studies in the College of Arts and Sciences. After 1962 Dr. Van Deusen was a research professor emeritus. He is the author of many historical books including: Sieves, His Life and His Nationalism (1932), The Life of Henry Clay (1937), Thurlow Weed: Wizard of the Lobby (1947), Horace Greeley: Nineteenth Century Crusader (1952), The Jacksonian Era, 1828‑1848 (1959), and William Henry Seward (1967).

The Van Deusen papers contain:



Plates, portraits, facsimiles used in Dr. Van Deusen's book, The Life of Henry Clay, Boston, Little, Brown & Co. 1937.



Copies of articles on Whigs which Dr. Van Deusen got on interlibrary loan in 1969 in researching an article.
