Biographical / Historical note

Frederick W. Meyer, Jr., a 1945 graduate of the University of Rochester Medical School, served in Vietnam in 1970 as Deputy Command Surgeon and Captain in the Navy Medical Corps as part of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV). This position involved interaction with other U.S. civil and military agencies and with the Vietnamese Surgeon General's office. It also gave Capt. Meyer the opportunity for extensive travel in Vietnam to have official and personal connections with Vietnam's business and social worlds.

Scope and Contents

The papers contain over 230 letters written by Capt. Meyer to his wife Lucy during his one-year tour of duty in Vietnam, and several letters from various Naval officers. The collection also contains more than 270 color slides (35mm), taken by Capt. Meyer throughout the country, of Vietnamese geographical landscapes, local businesses, and people. They are arranged and identified by Capt. Meyer. The contents of the letters and slides include graphic illustrations of statistics (casualty rates, disease, etc), disposition of U.S., allied and Vietnamese military forces, disposition of U.S. and Vietnamese medical facilities, and life in general for American officers and Vietnamese residents. Also included are photographs of the Cambodia campaign and several maps and charts showing information on medical facilities and the organization of political, military, and demographic regions of Vietnam.
