Biographical / Historical note

William McHarg was the descendant of Scotch parents belonging to a party of eleven heads of families who settled in Saratoga County in 1774. They called the place Galway, after the home they had left across the water. William was born in 1778 and eight years later he moved to Albany, NY. Here he grew up and engaged in the mercantile business. Becoming connected with the King family by marriage he became partners with Rufus H. King under the firm name McHarg and King in 1815. They continued their business until the company was dissolved in 1823; and then Rufus H. King and Co. emerged as a wholesale dry goods business. From 1830 to 1855, Mr. McHarg was bookkeeper in the New York State Bank in Albany. From 1855 until his death, he lived in Albion with his daughter Sophia (Mrs. Zephaniah Clark).
