Scope and Contents

Boxes contain business and legal papers, including wills, deeds, mortgages, birth and marriage certificates; lists of books and family possessions brought from England; clippings; genealogical and biographical material; unpublished bits of writing of several members of the family; tintypes, photographs, framed portraits; books, postcard album, and other memorabilia. One box contains family correspondence.

The Joseph James Family Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.

Use

In consultation with a curator, reproductions may be made upon request. Permission to publish materials from the collection must be requested from a curator. Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions.

Additional papers received April 23, 1962: Diary of Marie Brewer James, summer of 1900, 2 volumes, memorabilia of European trip; photographs and snap shots of members of the James family. Gift of Mr. David James, April 23, 1962.

Additional papers received Nov. 26, 1962: Further James family correspondence, primarily Marie Brewer to Frederick W. James (1900-1904); English Journals of Henry B., William H. and Frederick W. James (1899); William James' European Journal of 1935-1936 written in a series of letters to Richard Naylor, Irondequoit; Far East photographs taken by William James (1936-1949); and papers relating to William James' documentary films. Gift of Mr. David James, November 26, 1962.
