Biographical/Historical note

Mary (Chapin) Hubbell (1825-1905) was the daughter of Spencer and Eliza Chapin. On November 6, 1847 she married Walter Seymour Hubbell (1823-1909), PBK Union College, 1844. He was the son of Walter and Eliza (Phelps) Hubbell. Mary (Chapin) Hubbell and her husband lived in Canandaigua, N. Y.

Entry number 1122:Walter Hubbell, son of Abijah Hubbell (1761-1843), was born Bridgeport, Conn., Feb. 25, 1795; died Canandaigua, N.Y., March 25, 1848. He married Eliza Maria Phelps, born Suffield, Conn., Nov. 11, 1798; died Canandaigua, N.Y., June 20, 1839.

Entry number 2310: George Ramsey Hubbell, November 12, 1821 - June 17, 1839.

Entry number 2311: Walter Seymour Hubbell, July 18, 1823 - December 29, 1909.

Entry number 2312: Henry Phelps Hubbell, November 3, 1827 - (living 1880).

Entry number 2311: Walter Seymour Hubbell married November 6, 1847 to Mary, daughter of Spencer and Eliza Seymour Chapin.

Children:

Entry number 3582: Ella Sherman Hubbell, born Aug. 26, 1850; married October 7, 1880 to Frederick Brooks Hubbell.

Entry number 3583: Jeanette Phelps Hubbell, born May 4, 1852.

Entry number 3584: George Cameron Hubbell, October 20, 1854 - April 27, 1872.

Entry number 3585: Henry Seymour Hubbell, born January 19, 1856.

Entry number 3586: Mary Chapin Hubbell, born November 8, 1859.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of about 150 letters, 1802-1903, the main part being from the period 1845-1860. The letters center around Mary (Chapin) Hubbell and represent correspondence to and from her and members of her family including her grandmother, mother, husband, and children. The letters reveal day-to-day events and emotions. Travels, and family and local events, including births, marriages, and deaths, are discussed. Many of the letters are quite long.

Especially interesting are a series of letters, December 1849 - April 1850, which chronicle a trip the Hubbells made to Baton Rouge, La, and a series of letters, September 1856 - August 1857, between the Hubbells while he was in New York City for business reasons and she and the children remained in Canandaigua.

The collection also contains a small amount of non-correspondence manuscript material including poetry and bills.

The last folder in the collection contains a 21-page University of Rochester undergraduate history paper, "The Walter S. Hubbell Letters - A Glimpse into the Lives of a Nineteenth Century Family in Canandaigua, Now York" by Lorna Young, 1974.
