Biographical/Historical note

The American History Class was founded October 8, 1890, by Mrs. Alice Whittlesey McKown and Miss Marguerite Montgomery for the purpose of presenting and discussing papers on historical subjects. Each year a program of study is planned, and members are assigned paper topics. After eleven years of thorough study of American history, the Class broadened its interests to all history and, in 1901, changed its name to The History Class. Originally the meetings were held biweekly, but the Class now meets monthly from October to May.

Scope and Contents

The collection includes printed programs, a selection of papers presented by members, histories of the Class, book lists, and photographs.

Histories of The History Class by various authors were published in the University of Rochester Library Bulletin, vol. XXXXI (1989-1990).
