Biographical/Historical note
James Patrick Bernard Duffy, lawyer, businessman, congressman and judge, was born in Rochester, New York, on November 25th, 1878. He was educated at Nazareth Hall, Rochester, and the Rochester Free Academy; he graduated from Georgetown University in 1901 and in 1904, having graduated from Harvard Law School, began practicing law. He entered business at the request of his father and from 1911 to 1932 managed the Duffy-Powers department store in Rochester. He served as a Congressman in 1935 and 1936 and on the State Supreme Court Bench in 1937, after which he returned to his law practice which he continued until his death in Rochester on January 8th 1969.
Scope and Contents
The collection includes personal diaries containing detailed daily accounts; miscellaneous notebooks and pads containing lecture notes, "out of pocket expenses," miscellaneous material; and a number of printed books primarily on the Impeachment of H.L. Ritter, a district judge of the United States for the southern district of Florida.

The James Patrick Bernard Duffy Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Books Special Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.

In consultation with a curator, reproductions may be made upon request. Permission to publish materials from the collection must be requested from a curator. Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The collection was presented to the University of Rochester Library from his estate on August 15, 1969, by his nephew E. James Hickey and Miss C. Marie Blackwood, Executrix. The 1952 diary was received from E. James Hickey, June 17, 1983.
