Biographical/Historical note

The Corner Club was founded in Rochester, NY in 1922. According to its constitution, the purpose of the club was "to add to the joy of life through the social intercourse of men and women who are interested in the arts." The membership, which was restricted to 100, included artists, musicians, authors, architects, and general supporters of the arts. The club was named for the location of its building at the corner of Grove Place and Windsor Street. Members and their guests had access to the club for afternoon tea, lunches and dinners. A live-in caretaker, a Mrs. Thompson, maintained the building and provided the meals. Some of the initial members were: James B. Arnold, Claude Bragdon, J. S. Clubb, Barbara Duncan, Helen Ellwanger, Mr. and Mrs. Eliott Frost, Frank Gannett, Harold Gleason, Raymond Havens, Gertrude Herdle, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hoeing, George Humphrey, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. K. Mees, Edward Mulligan, Helen Rogers, Hiram Sibley, Herbert Stern, Mr. and Mrs. Hawley Ward, and A. J. Warner. There is no evidence in the Papers as to when or under what circumstances the club disbanded.
