Biographical/Historical note
Charles Ayrault Dewey was born in Rochester, New York on July 21, 1842. He was the youngest of nine children of Chester Dewey (1784-1867), a Rochester scientist, educator and founding faculty member of the University of Rochester and his second wife, Olivia Hart (Pomeroy) Dewey (1801-1885). His parents were natives of Massachusetts.
Dewey graduated from the University of Rochester in 1861 and then studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1864, but never practiced law. For the next twelve years he had a business career with some newspaper work. In 1876 he began the study of medicine. The next year he entered Harvard Medical School and graduated with a medical degree in 1880.
He practiced medicine in Rochester for a number of years. Throughout his life, and especially in his later years, he devoted himself to civic and scholarly interests and pursuits.
He received an honorary degree from the University of Rochester in 1924. He never married and died in Rochester on June 13, 1927 at the age of 84. His ashes were buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Rochester.
