Alternatives for Battered Women collection

 Collection
Identifier: D.237

Biographical/Historical note

Inspired by an article on battered women that appeared in the August, 1976 issue of Ms., Helen French organized a meeting on December 16, 1976 of women from Rochester's educational, nursing, and mental health communities. Also attending were representatives from church groups, local chapters of the National Organization for Women (NOW), the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), and other organizations. They founded Alternatives for Battered Women (originally called The Coalition for Battered Women) with the objective of providing women victims of domestic violence and their children with shelter and other services.

Scope and Contents

The Alternatives for Battered Women Collection consists of two scrapbooks compiled by Lura Carstens and Marion Strand of material that documents the history of Alternatives for Battered Women. Many of the records are from the files of Helen French. The scrapbooks include originals and photocopies of news clippings, meeting minutes, speeches, reports, and other relevant materials.

Also included in the collection are fifteen audio tapes of interviews done in 1990 by Carstens and Strand with several people who participated in the founding of Alternatives for Battered Women. Scrapbook 2 contains notes taken during some of the interviews.
