Biographical / Historical note

Sanford H. Elwitt was born on January 18, 1936 in Cleveland, Ohio. He attended high school in Miami Beach, Florida before enrolling at Cornell University in 1953. He received his Bachelor's of Arts degree in 1957 and then pursued a Masters degree at the University of Michigan. After graduating there in 1958, Elwitt returned to Cornell University where he pursued a PhD. Elwitt's doctoral thesis was titled The Radical Enter French Politics, 1870-1875. While pursuing his PhD, Elwitt served a visiting lecturer in History at Pennsylvania State University from 1961-1962. He received his degree in 1963 and served as an Assistant Professor at Southern Illinois University from 1962-1969. Before joining the History Department at the University of Rochester, Elwitt served as Associate Professor of History at Sir George Williams University.

Elwitt received several awards and honors throughout his career, include a Fulbright Pre-Doctoral Fellowship, a Cornell Social Science Grant, an American Philosophical Society Grant, and a Canada Council Research Grant. In 1981 Elwitt received a postdoctoral research grant from the American Council of Learned Societies related to social science reform in nineteenth-century France.

He served as the President of the New York Association of European Historians. Elwitt served as vice president and the program chairman for the 1976 conference of the Society of French Historical Studies, which was held at the University of Rochester.

Elwitt's published works include The Making of the Third Republic: Class Politics in France, 1868-1884.

Scope and Contents

The Sanford Elwitt Papers includes correspondence from 1950-1989 exchanged between him and his colleagues at the University of Rochester, and other institutions. Additional materials include grant proposals, reviews of others' writings, and materials related to Elwitt's role and promotion within the University of Rochester's History Department.
