Alvalyn Woodward papers
Biographical / Historical note
Dr. Alvalyn Eunice Woodward (May 29, 1884 to March 23, 1979) was born in Rochester to Alice and Charles E. Woodward, a lawyer with offices at the Powers Building. After graduating from the University of Rochester in 1905, Alvalyn Woodward headed the biology department at Michigan Central State Normal School from 1911-1912. She also taught zoology at Vassar College and worked as an instructor at Simmons College. In 1918, Woodward received her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, where she remained as Professor of Zoology until her retirement in 1953.
Dr. Woodward was a member of Theta Eta, Phi Beta Kappa, and Sigma Xi. Professional associations included the American Society of Zoologists, the American Association of University Women, the Women's Research Club, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
