Biographical/Historical note

Frederick Taylor Gates was born in Maine, New York in the 1860's and graduated from the University of Rochester in 1877. After attending Rochester Theological Seminar, Gates settled in Chicago and in 1889 met John Rockefeller, Sr. Rockefeller employed Gates, who soon managed all of his finances, including his expanding philanthropic efforts. Gates continued in this role, also serving John D. Rockefeller, Jr. until 1912. In 1927, one year before Gates's death he wrote an autobiography, Chapters in my Life, sharing the trajectory of his life's work. Gates died in 1929.

Scope and Contents

The Frederick Taylor Gates collection is comprised of one series: Typescript. The Typescript series contains the carbon copy of Chapters in My Life, which was used in the publication of the book.
