Meyer Bernstein papers
Biographical / Historical note
Meyer Bernstein was born on March 30, 1914, son of Philip and Sophie (Rubin) Bernstein, and brother of Jacob Bernstein. He graduated from Benjamin Franklin Junior-Senior High School in June, 1932, where he was the manager of the School Service Committee. He also ran a successful news stand (1931-32) on Rochester's busy Main Street corner in front of Liggett Drug Store. He won a competitive state scholarship to and attended Cornell University from September, 1932 - June, 1936, beginning his studies in Classics and later changing majors to Economics. After receiving his bachelor's degree from Cornell, Bernstein travelled to Germany in 1936, penniless save for travel fare, and he had difficulty finding passage home to the States. Bernstein died in 1985 at age 71.
