Biographical / Historical note

Ruth Hogarth Dennis was born on August 25, 1879 in Lima, NY, and was raised by her parents John and Jennie (Markham) Dennis in the city of Rochester. As a member of the University of Rochester class of 1903, Ruth Dennis was one of the first women to graduate from the University, which began to officially admit female students in 1900. While a student at the University Dennis knew Susan B. Anthony personally, and Anthony proudly wrote of Dennis's achievements in a 1903 letter to Sarah J. Eddy. Dennis graduated as a Phi Beta Kappa member and earned her M.A. from the University of Rochester in 1905. She was at one time president of the New York City metropolitan branch of Rochester alumnae. Following graduation Ruth Dennis taught Greek and Latin at the Rochester Free Academy and East High School, until her marriage to Bailey Barton Burritt (1878-1954) on May 18, 1909. Burritt was a graduate of the University of Rochester (1902) and Columbia (1903), and had a distinguished career in United States Public Heath and Social Welfare. The University of Rochester awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree in 1945. Ruth (Dennis) and Bailey B. Burritt lived in Yonkers, New York for the entirety of their married life. Together they had six children: Phyllis Louise (1910), Alan Hogarth (1914), Hazel Horton (1915), Bailey Barton, Jr. (1917), Alice Markham (1919), and Ruth Dennis (1921). Ruth (Dennis) Burritt was a poet, with two published volumes, and later in her life she taught herself to paint. She died in March 1960.
