Library: Rush Rhees Library addition material

 Collection
Identifier: UA229

Biographical/Historical note

In 1962 a Library Committee was appointed to estimate space needs in Rush Rhees Library over the next decade. With the Wallis administration's plans for an overall expansion of the University, the committee concluded that more space was inevitably going to be needed for more programs, more students and faculty, and more books and acquisitions.

The original architects had anticipated that Rush Rhees Library would one day need to grow. Forty years after the debut of the original building, a substantial addition to the library was dedicated on April 23-24, 1970. This addition wraps around the original building's back and parts of its sides and is of a more open, modern style. As with the older portion, the addition was designed with flexibility in mind, allowing it to evolve as needed.

Scope and Contents note

Rush Rhees Library Addition Material includes correspondence, specifications, notes, and other documentation related to the planning, design, and construction of the 1970 addition. A thick folder of proposals, cost estimates, and correspondence relating to the renovations made to Rush Rhees Library in 1971-72 can be found in Box 6. Box 7 contains a scrapbook compiled by Augusta Hoeing, widow of Professor Charles Hoeing, who had donated $25,000 for a garden court in memory of her father, Calvin C. Laney, Rochester's first superintendent of parks.
