Biographical/Historical note

John Harold Goldthorpe was born in Missoula, Montana on September 13, 1898. He received an A.B. degree from Hamline in 1920, an A.M. from Minnesota in 1924, and his Ph.D. degree from Minnesota in 1928. He was the superintendent of schools in Goodhue, Minnesota from 1920 to 1922, and an instructor of social studies at West High School in Minneapolis from 1922 to 1924. He was a statistician and registrar at Northwestern University from 1924 to 1926. In 1926 he became an instructor of education at the University of Minnesota, and in 1928 an assistant professor of education at the University of Buffalo. Dr. Goldthorpe came to the University of Rochester in 1931 as an assistant professor. In 1933 he became a full professor of education. He remained in Rochester until 1937 when he became a research assistant at Teacher's College at Columbia University. From 1939 until 1945 he was the research and administrative associate of the American Council of Education. In 1945 he began work in the Department of State as an administrative analyst, training consultant, education adviser and acting assistant chief in the division of International Exchange of Persons.

Dr. Goldthorpe's papers consist of various studies and reports that were made by the department of education while he was a professor at the University of Rochester.
