William E. Werner, Rochester jurist, served as clerk of the Rochester Municipal Court, Monroe County judge, New York State Supreme Court judge, and judge of the Court of Appeals of New York.

Scope and Contents

The collection includes correspondence (chiefly carbon copies of letters from Werner to friends and associates), speeches, briefs, opinions, and scrapbooks of clippings covering his legal career.

The William E. Werner Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Books, Special Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.

Presented to the University Library by his daughters, Mrs. Douglas Townson, Mrs. Hawley Ward, and Mrs. Frank E. Gannett, July 10, 1953 and February 5, 1954.
