Biographical/Historical note

The Chapin family lived at 110 South Fitzhugh Street, Rochester.

Scope and Contents

The Chapin family papers consist of 117 letters and 4 items of memorabilia. The letters are primarily correspondence to Harrison Lyon Chapin (1878-1955) and/or his younger brother Louis Chapin from their immediate family, including their father William Wisner Chapin (1851-1928), mother Elizabeth Gale (Lyon) Chapin (1852-1937, brother, sisters and grandmother.

The letters are non-business in nature, mentioning family doings, events, happenings, and trips. Many of the letters were written in 1907 when Harrison and Louis were managing a lead and zinc mine in Joplin, Missouri for their uncle, Edmund Lyon ("Op" or "Oppie" to his family). Mrs. Chapin was the sister of Edmund Lyon (1855-1920) and he and his family are mentioned in some of the letters. The Bessie R. Chapin photograph album includes pictures taken between 1896-1899. Vibrant Silence (1965) is the biography of Edmund Lyon and his wife Carolyn Talcott Lyon, written by their daughter Carolyn Lyon Remington. The book mentions and pictures the Chapin family.
