Biographical / Historical note

Horatio Gates Warner was a Rochester attorney, business man, newspaper publisher and editor. He was interested in literary and educational affairs and at the time of his death was a member of the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York. His home on Mount Hope Avenue, long known as "Warner Castle", was constructed under his close supervision in 1853/54, and the papers include what remains of the drawings, specifications, estimates and costs of its construction.

Of great interest is the material relating to the career of William H. Warner (1812-1849) a Brevet Captain in the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers, who was killed by Indians while on an exploring expedition in Sierra Nevada. Horatio Gates Warner made several trips to California during the early 1850's to settle the estate of his brother, William. The letters, diaries, journals, business and legal papers, essays, etc., which resulted from these journeys form an important collection of source material on California in the gold rush days.
