 Collection
Identifier: D.166

Biographical / Historical note

In early 1964, Rochester School #19's Parent Teachers Association and Brighton School One's Parent Teachers Association joined forces to develop a summer school program, designed to widen the social experience of both the city and suburban children through the arts and sciences. It ran for a five-week period, and was named the Urban‑Suburban Summer School Program. The Brighton Parent Teachers Association was the initiator of the idea and creator of the program. Their efforts resulted in the entry of twenty‑five city school children into the suburban summer school program. Scholarships were provided for the children who attended. The program ran every summer until the early 1970's.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings and miscellaneous papers on the functioning of the summer school program for three years. Also included in this collection are reports on race relations in Rochester and the integration of city school children in other districts.
