Tallcot-Howland family papers
Scope and Contents
The Tallcot-Howland Family Papers are comprised of 2 boxes containing approximately 140 letters to and from Joseph Tallcot (ca1768-1853) and members of his family. Tallcot, a Quaker, lived much of his later life in Skaneateles and Sherwood, New York. Included is a series of about twenty letters from Mary Thomas of Union Springs, New York to his daughter Phebe F. Tallcot. His daughter Hannah married Slocum Howland of Sherwood and there is some Howland Family correspondence, including letters to and from their daughter Emily Howland (1827-1929). Most of the letters in the collection are of an informal nature, mentioning events and topics of the day, including temperance. The collection includes the Quaker Union Tract Association Constitution (Farmington), July 7, 1817-1819 in folder 4 of box 2. The collection also contains approximately fifty non-correspondence manuscripts of a financial, legal, or religious nature, including material relating to the estates of Benjamin and Mary Howland and to Slocum Howland's store in Sherwood in the 1830's and 1840's. Correspondence by the following persons in the collection has been indexed: Antoinette Louisa (Brown) Blackwell (2 letters) Moses Brown (1 letter) Mahlon Day (1 letter) Mrs. Esther (Brewster) George (1 letter) William Reuben George (4 letters) Emily Howland (4 letters) Thomas Mott Osborne (1 letter) David Thomas (1 letter)
