Biographical / Historical note

William A. Searle was born in Oro Blanco, Arizona in 1884. In 1906 he graduated from the University of Rochester with a Ph.B. degree. He then worked as a reporter on various Rochester newspapers: Rochester Evening Times (1906), Rochester Herald (1906-1907), Rochester Evening Times (1907-1910), and the Rochester Post Express (1910-1911). From 1911 to 1913 he did post graduate work at Harvard University, afterward working for the Chambers of Commerce at Rome, New York, Manchester, New Hampshire, and Camden, New Jersey. In 1924 he began working for the Life Underwriters' National Association as the traveling assistant to the president of the company. He held this position until 1930, when he was elected executive vice-president and general manager of the Pyramid Life Insurance Company in Charlotte, North Carolina. Later he returned to newspaper work, editing the Haddonfield, New Jersey Gazette and Herald, and the Moorestown, New Jersey News Chronicle. In 1964 Mr. Searle retired and moved to Waseca, Minnesota to live with his son.
