Biographical / Historical note

Helen Rochester Rogers was born on October 7, 1882, the great-granddaughter of Colonel Nathaniel Rochester, founder of the City of Rochester. A graduate of Smith College, 1905, she took an active interest in the city, giving assistance to such organizations as the Lewis Street Settlement, which she helped to found in 1907, and the Society for the Preservation of Landmarks in Western New York. During the First World War, Miss Rogers volunteered for service in England and worked in London catering for the American Expeditionary Force. During this period she became acquainted with several English literary figures, notably John Masefield, who wrote to her over a long period of years, visited her in Rochester and remained a good friend until her death on May 6, 1964.
