Biographical / Historical note

Edwin Ruthvin Reynolds was born on February 16, 1816 in Fort Ann, New York, son of Linus J. Reynolds (1790-1838) and Alice (Baker) Reynolds. His father was the editor and publisher of the Northern Spectator in East Poultney, Vermont, where Edwin served his apprenticeship as a printer at the same time as Horace Greeley. Linus Reynolds later gave up the newspaper and became a full time Baptist minister. One of his parishes was in Penfield, New York where he served for six months in 1834. Edwin attended Brown University, and during his junior year he became the first principal of the Albion Academy in Albion, New York (1838-1846). He later served as the superintendent of schools in Orleans County from 1842-1843. He studied law under A. H. and D. H. Cole and set up a law practice in Albion in 1846. He became Justice of the Peace in Barre and then Clerk of the Board of Supervisors. He was the owner and publisher of the Orleans American from 1858-1859. From 1860-1861 he was a member of Congress, and served on the war committee for Orleans County from 1860-1865. In 1863 he was elected county judge and surrogate. In 1869 he was an elector on the Grant ticket, and was a Greeley elector in 1872.
