Sir Max Pemberton papers
Biographical / Historical note
Sir Max Pemberton was a British journalist, editor, novelist, and biographer, born June 19, 1863. In 1884, Pemberton married Alice Agnes Tussaud, granddaughter of wax sculptor Madame Marie Tussaud (1761-1850), and daughter of Joseph Tussaud. Pemberton was educated at Cambridge before going on to join the staff of Vanity Fair in 1885 and then serving as the first editor of the magazine for boys, Chum. From 1896 until 1906, Pemberton served as the editor of Cassell's Magazine. His most famous published works were The Iron Plate, 1893, and Captain Black, 1911. In addition to his literary career, Pemberton was a member 'Our Society' criminology literary society, along with literary contemporaries, Bertram Fletcher Robinson and Arthur Conan Doyle. In 1920, Pemberton founded the London School of Journalism. He was a biographer of Alfred Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Northcliffe (1865-1922), and Sir Frederick Henry Royce, 1st Baronet (1863-1933), founder of the Rolls-Royce company. Pemberton died February 22, 1950 in London.
Scope and Contents
The Sir Max Pemberton Papers are comprised of one box containing autograph manuscripts of two novels by Sir Max Pemberton (1863-1950), 'Captain Black', published in 1911, and 'The Virgin Fortress', published in 1912. There is also a letter to J. J. Dahle, dated August 28, 1900. Acquired by purchase (Bertram Rota, September 6, 1968)

The Sir Max Pemberton Papers is open for research use. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Books, Special Collections & Preservation Department prior to visiting. Upon arrival, researchers will also be asked to fill out a registration form and provide photo identification.
